While the libretto for Gilbert and Sullivan’s 1871 collaboration Thespis survives, most of its original music has been lost to time. To honor the work’s centenary in 1971, Bruce Montgomery composed a new score in Sullivan’s signature style. This overture belongs to that complete two-act reconstruction, which has now been published for the first time.
Composed by Bruce Montgomery in 1962, this setting of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was premiered on the historic battlefield by the Penn Glee Club and broadcast nationally for the speech's centennial in 1963. The piece remains a poignant tribute, most recently featured at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum in 2013 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the address.
Written by Bruce Montgomery in 1964, "Afterglow" has evolved into a beloved University of Pennsylvania staple and the official theme song of the Penn Glee Club. This recording features the Glee Club under Montgomery’s own direction during the 1990s. The piece remains a highlight of the Songs of Penn collection.
Composed by Bruce Montgomery in 1999 for chamber orchestra, this melodic tone poem features a Gaelic lilt that honors the composer’s Scottish heritage. It was originally premiered by the Philadelphia Concerto Soloists under the direction of conductor Marc Mostovoy.
This rare archival recording, recently discovered on an old reel-to-reel tape, captures Bruce Montgomery as a guest soloist at Philadelphia's Academy of Music in March 1967. The performance features Montgomery singing four of his own show tunes: "Connemara" (Spindrift), "Learning Love" (The Amorous Flea), "Eagle High" (Jesse), and a charming duet of "Little Girl Lonely" (Why Me?) performed with his six-year-old niece, Susan Montgomery Thomas.
